Max/MSP assignment for Sept. 12

Updated - the patch should now work correctly on your own computers. For this Wednesday, Sept. 12, please download this patch (an adaptation of Tutorial 7, Additive Synthesis) and use it to record your own sounds. If you don't have a trial copy of Max/MSP on your own computer, you can use the CAMIL lab - also, this patch doesn't need to be edited, so you can even use MaxMSP Runtime. More instructions are in the patch itself. Have fun!

Please also work through the MSP tutorials 7 (additive synthesis) through 10 (vibrato and frequency modulation).

I didn't get a sound while I was trying to do it.

Thanks for letting me know - I'll be in early in the morning to check this. I suspect the problem might be that Max/MSP is playing through the audio interface next to the computer screen, instead of the built-in audio. So you need to plug your headphones into the headphone jack on the front of the audio interface. Sorry, I should have thought of that on Monday!

I got sound, but ran into a different problem. I couldn't figure out how to change the sound by changing the 'partial' numbers. I would change them but the sound would be the same. I figured out that I had to change the frequency (if only to change it back again) to make the sound use the new partial numbers.

My sounds
Sound 1
Sound 2

Great sounds Joe! Now I realize I should have given you some pointers for converting them to mp3 files, so they don't take up so much space. I'm not sure why you had to change the frequency, that didn't happen to me on Monday, or before. I'll check in the morning....

Well I got it working my own computer now. The sound is kind of soft for some reason (it's really loud in the program).

This is the second one one. I'm not sure what happened but there are "clicks" in this that almost generate a good beat.

Sounds good Mike - could the second sound have some clipping in it? That could cause clicks.

yeah, i'm trying to open the patch and it says it's opening, but i still have a blank screen. I'm not 100 percent sure what's going on. My computer is having a lot of trouble handling this program, it just doesn't like it for some reason.

hey,

due to the fact that i felt my other 2 sounds were more harmonic i made a third which is more in harmonic.
